SAMPLE CLASS TOPICS

BLUES FOUNDATIONS: Learn to the basic footwork and continue the flow of the music while keeping your Blues Aesthetic into your dance with easy & fun techniques to keep your dancing seemless. Learn the differences between weight changes and steps - and how to apply them.

SLOW DRAG: The earliest form of Blues Dance! When Bluesers danced in public venues, the music was more jazz & ragtime, but the connect was oh-so-yummy. This style danced to the swinging rhythms found in Blues music.

JOOKIN' BLUES: One of the more primitive forms where dancers found any space to dance developed from the corwded house parties, juke joints, and roadhouses. People just danced the way the music moved them. The dance movements and techniques are pushed into the ground with each step, with dancers typically staying in a limited place because there was often not very much room and dancers try to improvise with sharp, repetitive hip movements.

BALLROOMIN' - Ballroomin' blues began as jazz and swing music was being played in ballrooms like the Savoy Club and Cotton Clubs when the bands would play slower songs as well as the fast swing songs. Similar to the earlier techniques of Slow Drag, the dancers would dance to these slower songs slightly more upright, traveling across the floor, and with larger moves because they would have more space to dance in.

(Surviving) FAST BLUES a.k.a. STRUTTIN': Not all Blues music is slow and sassy. Learn a few tricks on how to keep your Blues Aesthetic into songs that speed up and start swinging.

SLOWMENTUM (Int/Adv): Let the music dance YOU! Don't just repeat the basic patterns, but listen to the nuances within the music and put that into your dancing. If the music speeds up - you speed up. If it gets funky - you get funky. Learn to the basic footwork and continue the flow of the music while keeping your Blues Aesthetic into your dance with easy & fun techniques to keep your dancing seemless. Learn the differences between weight changes and steps - and how to apply them.

SWING BLUES FUSION: Not all Blues Dance is up close & personal. Keep the Blues Aesthetic while adding elements of swing dance by opening up your position, adding turns, spins, and your expression. While based on vintage traveling Blues dances, it has more defined technique and intigrates Swing moves and movements.

Just like swing dance, there are several styles/forms of Blues Dance
in which the dancers take the emotion and feeling of what kind of music is being played.
