"Savoy" style and is credited to having come out of Harlem NY named after the famous Savoy Ballroom. The other, "Hollywood" which is associated with a man named Dean Collins coming out of Southern California. They each have distinct variations and although both are danced to swing music. Hollywood style tends to be danced to faster more upbeat tempo music and the posture is more upright. While Savoy style tends to be more circular and "grounded" which lends itself to faster movements through the basic. Pattern is "step, step, triple-step, step, step, triple-step".

CHARLESTON - There are three forms of Charleston: 20's, 30's and Tandem. 20's Charleston is based off partners in open position doing the basic pattern. 30's Charleston also called "side-by-side", which in fact has partners side-by-side with contact at the hips. Tandem Charleston has partners in front of each each doing patterns simultaneouslly.

BLUES - This style emphasizes on partner connection off the basic called "The Pulse". It is the driving beat within the Blues music that keeps the partners connected. This style uses the emotions created from the music and incorporating it into the dance and partners.

BALBOA - This style builds on an 8-count basic step & is done completely in closed position posture with intricate footwork. It is a smooth style dance great for up-tempo songs or for conserving space and energy on the dance floor. Incorporates lots of subtle, intricate footwork and body-leads. Pattern is "step, step, hold, step, step, step, hold , step".

COLLEGIATE SHAG - This style is also uses a 6-count basic which is primarily is danced to faster tempos and incorporates faster footwork too. Pattern is "Slow, Slow, Quick, Quick"
